Augmented reality system for the promotion and touring of urban parks
Urban parks and open green spaces are important poles of environmental interest for the residents and visitors of a city. In addition to the environmental advantages offered by the existence of greenery within the urban tissues, parks are places of recreation, centers of cultural events, and above all areas of citizen contact with nature, environmental education, mainly for students, but also environmental awareness for all citizens, regardless of age. The careful and properly oriented highlighting of these areas not only increases the importance of their existence in the urban fabric, but at the same time can contribute to the development of alternative forms of "green" tourism, but also in the direction of the environmental awareness of citizens, something that which is particularly important nowadays and crucial for the future of the planet.
The main objective of the project was to develop, test, and evaluate an integrated extended reality application for visitors to urban parks and green spaces. This application aimed to create an attractive, interactive browsing environment that highlighted elements of environmental and historical interest at the site. Simultaneously, it received multimedia information from users through crowdsourcing and automatically collected anonymized data that could be useful to park managers. The goal is to enhance the browsing experience for visitors while better highlighting and utilizing the park spaces.
